Customers hold the power of how valuable your product or service is to them. But knowing how to target the audience is key to making sure your product or service is valuable to the right people.

What is a Target Audience?

A target audience is a particular group at which an activity, advertising campaign, etc., is aimed at.

Target audiences are commonly used in conjunction with a created buyer persona by the company. Buyer personas are a profile of a customer made by the business of what the ideal customer is.

Common demographics and behavior areas are:

  • Location
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Employment
  • Income
  • Interests

This information is helpful to understand the customer and how they make purchase decisions. Getting specific for your target audience will help your campaigns reach the correct people who relate most to your businesses message and products.

Do Competitor Market Research

For your product or service, you need to know your industry and how it’s doing with customer retention. To do this you want to research different businesses who are selling something similar to you. Observe how they engage with their customers on online and offline, what part of the marketing funnel are they doing in each post, and when they post. Make sure to diversify your research and to not only target large companies, but small ones as well.

Know Who Your Target Audience Isn’t

If the above ways are giving your trouble, try creating a list of who your customers aren’t. Having a visual of who would not benefit from your product or service will get you closer to finding out who your target audience is.

Use Google Analytics or Facebook Pixel

Google Analytics and Facebook Pixel are similar to how they capture consumer data. They both have their benefits on telling you where your consumers are coming from, the device they are using, and how long they stay on your website. However, I would recommend using both for your website as I have noticed Facebook Pixel goes in more detail and presents it in a way, that’s easy to understand for those who aren’t advanced in interpreting the data how Google displays it.
